Explore the changing landscapes of the arctic wilderness on a guided riverboat tour through stunning Alta Canyon. Witness dramatic cliffs, rapids, and waterfalls while learning about local nature and fishing traditions.
Begin your journey from Bollo, drifting gently along the lower Alta River. As lush birch and pine forests line the banks and small farms dot the shores, your guide will introduce the region’s natural environment and salmon fishing culture.
Gradually, the river narrows and the pace quickens as you enter West Finnmark’s wild heart. Rapids begin to stir and walls of rock rise on both sides, guiding you deeper into Northern Europe’s largest canyon.
At the impressive Steinfossen (Gabo), the boat reaches its farthest point. Towering cliffs as high as 400 m and cascading waters unfold around you. Your guide shares local legends, including the tale of “Gabokjerringa,” said to bless fishermen who honour her with offerings.
Duration is approximately 2 hours. Departure is from Bollo on the Alta River—please check the detailed meeting point. Dress in layers suited to arctic conditions; we recommend windproof outerwear, sturdy footwear, and wool base layers. Group size is limited to 5–7 participants to maintain an intimate experience.
